Choosing the ideal dog bike trailer for your dog in 5 steps

A dog bike trailer is an excellent way to take your dog along on cycling trips, but how do you know which dog bike trailer best suits you and your four-legged friend? In this article, we guide you through the selection process in 5 simple steps.

Choosing the ideal dog bike trailer for your dog in 5 steps

Step 1: Determine your dog’s weight and dimensions

The first and most important step when choosing a dog bike trailer is determining the right size for your dog. We consider this the most crucial step in the selection process. Often, dog bike trailers are described by their maximum weight capacity, such as 30kg or 50kg. This weight is purely indicative of what the frame can support and says nothing about the size of dog that will fit in the cabin. Your dog must be able to lie comfortably in the cabin. Below, we explain how to best measure your dog’s dimensions:

How to measure your dog:

  1. Have your dog lie relaxed on the ground
  2. Measure the length from nose to the base of the tail
  3. Measure the height from the floor to the shoulder (withers height)
  4. Weigh your dog (or have this done at the vet)

“At InnoPet, we offer dog bike trailers for different dog sizes,” explains Sven from InnoPet. “From small dogs to large breeds up to 50 kg. It’s essential that your dog can sit or lie comfortably in the cabin.”

Which size dog bike trailer fits your dog?

For convenience, we’ve listed the dimensions of our dog bike trailer cabins below so you can see at a glance which trailer is best suited for your dog:

Jacqueline Anderson, owner of her lovely Harry, shares her experience:

“After researching online for something large enough for my 30 kg Harry, I found the InnoPet Hercules. When we first got it home, I thought it might be too bulky. But I have no regrets. The Hercules fits in the car, on the ferry, and even on the train.”

Step 2: Consider usage scenarios

Think about where and when you want to use the dog bike trailer:

  • Daily use: Invest in a durable, high-quality model
  • Vacations and outings: Choose a model that easily collapses for car transport
  • Medical necessity: Consider purchasing an orthopedic cushion for extra comfort if your dog needs it

“We use the trailer for short walks close to home when Harry needs to rest, but we also often take it on longer trips to the coast and even to France,” says Jacqueline Anderson.

Step 3: Check the key features

We believe a good dog bike trailer must meet certain criteria. All our dog bike trailers are designed with these considerations in mind:

Safety:

  • Sturdy construction
  • Reflective elements for visibility
  • Ability to secure your dog in the trailer with at least two leash attachments

Comfort:

  • Minimum 16 inch (or 40.5 cm) rear wheels
  • Sufficient ventilation
  • Protection against rain and wind (a rain cover is the perfect solution for this)

Ease of use:

  • Simple folding and unfolding system
  • Easy to attach to the bicycle
  • Ability to collapse for transport or storage
  • Extra storage space for necessities
  • Removable cover so it can be washed*

*The covers can only be hand washed and mild soap should be used. Do not dry the cover in direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

Step 4: Compare the different models

We’ve briefly described our bike trailers below, each with their specific advantages. Click on the product name to view the full product pages:

  • Maximum weight capacity: 50 kg

“The Hercules 2.0 is a sturdy and wide dog trailer that can support a maximum weight of 50 kg and ensures your large friend has a very comfortable ride.”

Step 5: Make an informed choice with durability in mind

Finally, there are numerous suppliers of dog bike trailers on the market. You can buy a bike trailer for your dog online starting from €100.00, but is this really the right choice? We stand for quality, durability, and excellent service. Every InnoPet product is made from high-quality materials to last for years, and with more than 20 years of experience designing these products, we know exactly what you need to go on carefree adventures with your loyal four-legged friend.

“With our InnoPet bike trailers, you’re assured of the availability of spare parts, even years after purchase,” says Sven.

“This is not only more sustainable but also saves you the cost of a new purchase if a part needs to be replaced.”

Reliable Reputation:

  • Since 2007, pet owners throughout Europe have trusted InnoPet, with countless positive reviews confirming our quality.
  • Purchasing an InnoPet product is an investment in years of carefree use and shared adventures with your loyal four-legged friend.

Multifunctional use:

Imagine this: you’ve completed a beautiful bike ride with your dog, and now you want to walk in the forest, but your loyal friend isn’t as mobile as they once were. It’s ideal to be able to use the dog bike trailer as a dog stroller as well. We deliver all our bike trailers complete: including front wheel AND walking kit. Click the front wheel into the holder, simply remove the bike attachment from your bicycle by releasing the locking clip at the coupling, and you can continue your journey on foot. No extra costs to take those extra steps together. That’s another reason to choose a model that can be used as both a bike trailer AND a stroller. This gives you more usage options and more value for your money.

Serena Coley confirms the value of a durable choice:

“Since Staffordshire Bull Terriers are prone to joint problems and arthritis, the InnoPet Hercules 2.0 is an investment to enjoy now and in the future! After we finish cycling, we can easily convert the bike trailer into a dog stroller without my dog having to move.”
