Getting older: the dog population is ageing

Just like humans, dogs need a little more care as they age. An old dog may experience mobility problems or loss of vision or hearing. It may become a little more difficult to walk your senior dog, but even an aging dog still likes to go outside!

Getting older: the dog population is ageing

As dog owners, we naturally want to have our four-legged friends with us for as long as possible. Fortunately, improvements in nutrition, care, and medication have helped extend the life expectancy of dogs. Our beloved pet is getting older and older. And with the increasing popularity of adopting adult dogs, as this is often a lot easier than raising a puppy, the aging of the dog population is a growing trend. Do you have a senior dog?

When is your dog considered a senior?

As the owner of a senior dog, you are not alone: a study by I&O Research has shown that more than 41% of dog owners in the Netherlands have a dog of 8 years or older. You, too, are probably reading this article because you currently have a dog that is aging, or you notice that walking is a becoming a bit more difficult. Every dog ages, but not every dog ages in the same way and speed. The more you pay attention to the signs of aging in your dog, the faster and better you can let him or her enjoy their old age. Is your dog’s fur gradually turning grey, do you notice that he or she is becoming less mobile and tired more quickly? These symptoms may indicate that your dog is getting older. Changes in his sight and hearing, fluctuations in weight, problems with his teeth and sudden fear of people can also indicate old age. These physical and mental changes cause your dog to have different needs, which makes adjustments to their lifestyle important.

Changing needs

Senior dogs have different needs than puppies. And just like older people, older dogs also need more rest and care. Our four-legged friends are not that different from us! To give your best friend the care they need in old age, it is important to respond to his or her changing needs. Because of their reduced mobility, your dog can no longer walk long distances or run next to the bicycle, but that does not alter the fact that going outside still brings your dog a lot of joy. Despite the changes that come with time, enjoying the outdoors together doesn’t have to end now that your dog is less active or needs extra care. Our dog prams and bicycle trailers give you and your dog the opportunity to go out together again. The dog prams are available in different shapes and sizes and are therefore suitable for every dog and situation.

4 Tips: walking your dog next to the stroller

Your dog probably won't be in the dog stroller the entire time you walk. Walking a dog on a leash alongside a dog stroller can still be quite a challenge. The leash getting caught between the wheels, your dog walking too close in front of the stroller, or pulling so hard on the leash that the dog stroller falls over. What can you do about this?
